A lot of Christians I know that are interested in gardening and farming want to use their agriculture as a way to show the love of Jesus to others. For some this means growing a big garden and giving away the produce to friends, family, and the needy. For others it means having a profitable business selling healthy food to people in their community.
But what would Jesus want us to do with the fruits and vegetables we grow in our gardens?
There seems to be a lot of confusion among the church at times regarding the relationship of ministry, profit, generosity, helping the poor, and what God really calls us to as disciples of Jesus.
- Is the most loving thing to give away what I grow to others?
- How can running a profitable business be helping the poor?
- Can small-scale farming even be profitable unless you are selling pricy products to rich people?
These are some of the questions we hope to address at the 2018 Redeeming the Dirt Conference, October 11-13 in Rockford, Alabama.
I am excited to have Ray Tyler of Rose Creek Farms joining us for the conference! He is going to share his family’s testimony of learning to run a small farm business in a way that facilitates the things God calls them to as his disciples. Over the years Ray has gone from working super hard with an overwhelming farm business, to being a skilled farm craftsman with a highly productive and profitable farm that leaves plenty of time for family and other activities. Ray also educates other farmers in the skills and mindsets that have helped him so much over the years.
